There are so many flies to choose from for saltwater fishing. Whether you are going for the first time or have only done freshwater fly fishing you can never go wrong with doing a little research on the type of saltwater game fish you are going for. Here are a few different types of saltwater flies and the type of fish that go for them.

When you are inshore fishing you generally will find fish such as bluefish, sea bass, and striped bass. There are many types of flies that are very effective in this area for these types of fish. Here are a few flies and why they are so effective. The anchovy zonker is an excellent choice it is a non-fouling fly. It features a rabbit strip type wing with a pearlescent body. This is an excellent fly for a fly fisherman who wants a pattern the resists fouling. It is also great for school fishing and other fish that go for small bait fish.

However what works for one type of fish may not work for others. If you are going for fish such as bonito, Spanish mackerel, or false albacore you would want a different saltwater fly such as a gummy minnow or bubble head popper. These are excellent for the fore mentioned saltwater fish.

So let’s start with the bubble head popper. A bubble head popper features a hole drilled through the face to the top of the fly. This allows water to squirt through the hole which gives the fly more action even if you are retrieving it slowly which makes it more diverse of a fly. The hole also adds more sound to the fly which drives the fish into a feeding frenzy that will likely leave you spending less time casting and more time counting your catch for the day. The scale pattern is also very realistic while also adds appeal for the game fish.

Finally last but not least by any means is the gummy minnow. This fly is a innovation to say the least. It is made from a reflective, soft material know as sili skin. It makes this saltwater fly look and feel real as a bait fish. Without a doubt this bait is very effective at snagging that big catch you are looking for. Why would it not? It looks so much like a real bait fish even you would not be able to tell.
